Matt Klos Biography
Matt Klos is a painter of interiors and plein-air landscapes that have taken him to Stonington, Maine, New Brunswick, Canada, and the Brittany region of France. His works have been exhibited nationally and internationally and he was awarded Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council in both 2012 and 2008. His work was selected for a solo exhibition award at the Prince Street Gallery in Chelsea, NY in 2011 and he received an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 2001.
He teaches drawing and painting at Anne Arundel Community College and is currently on sabbatical working on two projects: the first project is to create paintings of the dozens of dilapidated buildings at the Fort Howard Veteran’s Facility in Edgemere, MD and the second project entails curating an exhibition entitled “A Lineage of American Perceptual Painting,” highlighting the works of the great American painter Edwin Dickinson and the subsequent generations of painters whom he influenced and inspired.

Matt Klos Criteria
The fundamental criteria for any professional exhibition is quality work. I take for granted that all work in a professional exhibition will be well conceived, well executed, and professionally presented. This was certainly true of all works on view in “The Best of the Chesapeake.” Beyond this I am looking for a particular life within the work. Something that will pull me in for a closer look. Some paintings/drawings are primarily about one thing in particular… it could be the sweep of the composition or a certain tranquil mood or an atmosphere prevalent at a certain time of day in a certain season… other works are about complexity and color and mark…
I chose for awards those paintings which I felt best conveyed the particular qualities within which the artist was working. I chose those paintings that maintained my interest through the exceptional quality of the work and, in some cases, I chose paintings that were a bit off the beaten track but offered me both quality and a new way of thinking about painting.
