Tim Bell

Tim Bell is a painter in the American Impressionist tradition. His work reflects the influences of painters such as John Twachtman, Charles Hawthorne, Hovsep Pushman and Henry Hensche.

A graduate of Frostburg State University with a degree in Fine Arts, Tim conducted his post-Graduate studies at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, Maryland and the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusettes.

Tim Bell Biography

Tim Bellbegan studying with the well-known portrait painter Cedric Egeli in 1994 and has assisted Cedric in teaching color painting at the Cape Cod School of Art. Tim studied briefly with Maryland Impressionist John Ebersberger, who introduced him to George T. Thurmond. It was Thurmond, a devoted student of the late Henry Hensche, who Tim credits with having taught him the sound principles of the Hensche method of painting.

The Hensche-Hawthorne philosophy is based on a disciplined study of nature concerned with the quality and condition of light. Hence, the focus of the painting is the environment or atmosphere that the scene is contained therein. The objects are simply a foil for the light, a means to expression. Tim uses oils and a combination of palette knives and brushes on canvas to create his paintings that are a tribute to the rich artistic heritage of American Impressionism.

Tim’s paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. He is a Certified Member of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters and is also active in the Rehoboth Art League in Delaware where he also teaches landscape paintings. Tim is the recipient of many awards and honors and actively participates in a variety of shows and exhibitions. His paintings hang in private collections throughout the United States and Great Britain and are also included in the collection of Frostburg State University. Tim is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association and was honored to be juried into the 2004 "Sunlight and Shadow" exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. In the 2006 Paint Easton plein air painting competition, Tim Bell won the Grand Prize for his oil painting of skipjacks on the Chesapeake Bay.
