History of Nocturnes

It had to be a creative mind,
the first artist who decided to paint the night!

James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), a strong-willed, urbane American painted one of the most notable nocturnes, raising this genre to wide public attention. Whistler's painting of fireworks in 1875, "Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket" stirred both praise and vehement criticism.

Whistler began calling his paintings 'nocturnes', after Frederick Leyland used the term in the 1870's to describe Whistler's beautiful night-time paintings of the Thames. CMcBride
