Artists Biography:

Scott B. Royston, b. 1974, American

Born February 2, 1974 in Baltimore County, Maryland, Scott Royston was educated in the Baltimore County Public School System through the ninth grade.  In September 1990, out of 500 applicants, he was one of ninety accepted into the Baltimore School for the Arts, located in downtown Baltimore City, and graduated in June 1993 with a degree in Visual Arts.  It was during his junior year at the BSFA that he first learned of the Schuler School of Fine Arts and in the summer of 1992, he started attending their six-week summer session.  In October 1994, he started full time at the school, including their night classes held two nights a week, and graduated in May 1998.  He went on to complete his Graduate Year (fifth year) at Schulers in May 1999.

Driven to learn more, he sought out and attended various workshops, often from artists who had taught at the Schuler School in previous years. The artists with which he chose to pursue his skills included Schuler graduate and prior instructor, Jerome Atherholt, and artist and prior graduate, Will Wilson, who also came to the school to give demonstrations during the course of each school year. In addition, Scott studied three years from ’97 to ’99 under the direction of artist and former graduate of the Schuler School, Matt Zoll.

Scott has since cultivated the techniques and traditions of the Old Dutch Masters into paintings reflecting his own unique messages.  His ability has not gone unnoticed, and he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including being a seven-time Finalist Winner in The Artist’s Magazine, twice selected in the Top Ten in International Artist’s Magazine competitions, a winner of the People’s Choice Award and Merit Award for Still Life, Salon International 2006.  Scott’s paintings can be found in many private collections throughout the United States, as well as Canada and Scotland.  He continues to broaden his scope of studies and knowledge of the arts through his travels, both within the states and abroad.  Scott enjoys teaching selected private and group lessons, favorite topics  are the techniques and  painting traditions of the Dutch Old Masters.
