Sam Robinson Biography

Born in 1953, Sam Robinson is an Equine Sporting Artist in the tradition of Alfred Munnings, Franklin Voss and many other painters who make horses, hounds and country life their primary subjects. His home and studio are in the Greenspring Valley of North Baltimore County, an easy drive from Maryland's Hunt Country and the rural courses that host timber racing in the region. He paints in a fluent representational style using gouache field studies and photo references to create his larger studio oils.

His artistic calendar is closely related to the seasons of the equine activities in the region. In the Spring, the local Hunt Clubs host hunter trials and point to point races, and Sam routinely attends these with his pochade box of gouache. These are quickly followed by the season of sanctioned races of the National Steeplechase Association for which Sam serves as the Official Artist. Summer has horse shows and then racing resumes in the Fall. As Winter approaches, the Hunt Clubs open their official season and Sam follows various regional clubs in their local country. The equine scene on the East Coast extends from New York to the Carolinas, and Sam travels to attend events.

Sam is a Signature Member of the American Academy of Equine Art and participates in their annual cycle of shows. Most of his exhibits, many organized and mounted by Sam Robinson Fine Art, take place in alternative venues associated with the equine sporting world. He sells most of his work privately and accepts commissions. Having developed a solid reputation with the horse sport enthusiasts, his current project is to bring the subject to a wider audience by submitting work to national juried shows.
