Born and raised in upstate New York, Handford now resides in Virginia traveling to paint various locales along the East Coast and throughout New England. Coastal harbors, sailing, and landscapes are favorite subjects. Entertaining the viewer with strong light and shadow, Handford’s loose painterly style captures the essence of the subject while focusing on the feeling and mood of the moment. He often works en plein air to more accurately capture the quality of light and color of the subject. Although mostly self-taught, Handford has studied with many internationally reknown artists. He is a signature member of both the North East Watercolor Society and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. He was featured in the Fall 2007 issue of the American Artist Watercolor magazine article titled "The Art of Storytelling". Hanford was previewed in the June 2006 issue of the American Art Collector magazine for his classic transparent watercolor style. He is an elected member of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters. His award-winning artwork has been shown in international, national, and regional exhibitions, and many of his paintings are included in corporate and private collections across the country. He is currently conducting workshops and giving demonstrations along the East Coast. McBride Gallery is pleased to represent the work of Bruce Handford. |
